PERT – Project (Program) Evaluation Review Technique
PERT is an acronym for project ( program ) evaluation review technique, the predominant purpose of this technique is to ascertain the amount of time required to realistically complete a project. The origin of PERT can be traced back to the 1950’s when it was developed for the United States Navy to facilitate the overall management of weapon creation and defense projects.
Time Estimate for a Project using PERT
As alluded above, the major use of PERT is to determine the amount of time required to complete a project, there are three time estimates you can arrive at using PERT, these are :-
(i) The shortest possible amount of time required to complete each task in a project
(ii) The most probable amount of time required to complete each task in a project
(iii) The longest amount of time required to complete each task in a project
When estimating the amount of time required to realistically finish a project using PERT, it is usually calculated backward from a fixed end date, this because the project deadlines are not usually modifiable due to extra cost that will be incurred if modified.
